About Author

Dr Angelica Ortiz de Gortari

Dr Angelica B. Ortiz de Gortari is a postdoc researcher with a PhD in psychology and specialisation in mental health and Child and Youth Studies.  The goal of her research is maximising the psychological and social benefits of interactive technologies while reducing the potential risks it can present to some individuals. Critical inquiry on the psychosocial implications of interactive technologies has been her professional passion since undergraduate school when she conducted one of the first studies on internet addiction in 2000. In 2010, she coined the term Game Transfer Phenomenon (GTP) carving a multidisciplinary area of research to understand the effects of video games. Her research on GTP has received awards and been founded by the European Union. Her research has had impact beyond academia and featured worldwide in books about everything from video games, evolution of the senses and a science fiction book; reports (Lloyds emerging risk report (2018); POSTnote by the United Kingdom’s Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (2012), newspapers/ magazines (e.g. The Telegraph – Science, (2016) and the Guardian (2014); Boston Globe (2014); The International Herald Tribune (2011); Discovery News (2016); TV and radio programs (BBC TV news East Midlands (2015); BBC World Service – Click (2011); an episode of the TV series “CSI: Cyber”). She has published academically and presented at several international conferences.
